Pool time in Alberta’s colder months makes for a fantastic opportunity to build confidence, improve skills, and connect with paddlesport communities across the province. Whether you’re new to paddling or looking to refine your abilities, pool sessions offer a warm, safe space to start or continue your paddling journey. For beginners, this is the ideal environment to practice essential skills like flipping over and confidently performing a wet exit, the precursor to feeling relaxed and ready for moving on to learn other paddling skills. For those new paddlers progressing, it’s a place to work on learning or perfecting rolls, refining our edging techniques, and even practicing rescues / assists. Advanced paddlers can also benefit, as pool sessions offer a unique opportunity to hone discipline-specific skills in freestyle, slalom, and canoe polo—all while having fun and staying active in a supportive, social setting.
Interested in starting a program in your local pool?
The Alberta Whitewater Association is here to help! If you’re interested in initiating a winter kayaking program at your local aquatic facility, we can assist with facilitating conversations with pool management and guiding you or your club through the process. Whether you’re an individual paddler, a club leader or looking to create a youth program, the AWA offers resources and expertise to support you in bringing paddlesports to new communities.
